Several times a year, Americans who have homes discover that there are those who do not. We refer to them as "the homeless", and our awareness of them is fleeting which is attributable, in part, to the media and our own fast-paced lifestyles. Occasionally, reporters in search of a "human interest story" interview these anonymous individuals. We see them enjoying a turkey dinner and, a few weeks later, on the 6 o'clock news, unwrapping small gifts such as socks and shirts. |

Then, because we are busy and the media journey elsewhere in search of happier, more "upbeat" stories, we forget about the homeless. Each year, between 1.2 and 2 million Americans will experience a period of homelessness. Many of these individuals are military veterans. In Massachusetts, there are approximately 7000 homeless veterans. They have not been forgotten. |
